Mirasol explain delays, shows 4.1" mobile phone concept, expects at least one 5.7" e-reader by end of 2011

There's a very interesting post over at Engadget about Mirasol displays. The company is showing a concept 4.1" phone which looks nice, but these kind of displays are 3-4 years away. The company says that they were actually expecting several e-reader products with Mirasol displays, but Apple iPad changed all that and all the device makers scrapped their plans. They do expect at least one converged e-reader with a 5.7" Mirasol display by the end of the year.

Samsung unveils a 6.2" electrowetting display prototypes

Samsung is showing new Electrowetting 6.2" display prototypes. They are showing 3 different displays - a color reflective one, a mono reflective one and a low frequency one. We don't have any technical information yet...

E Ink announces a new logo and corporate identity

E Ink announced a new logo and corporate identity to 'combine all of the E Ink portfolio companies under one brand". The new brand "evokes E Ink’s commitment to innovation, emerging markets and the environment".

The corporate signature is a stylized design of the E Ink name and incorporates duality as its theme. The drop of ink on the top right of the “E” represents what writing means to cultural heritage. The connection of the ink drop to the “E” represents the merging of traditional printed text with electronic media.

E Ink on flexible cloth

E Ink released a couple of very interesting videos. The first shows a SURF (segmented) E Ink display printed on cloth. E Ink are obviously thinking about wearable displays here:

The second video shows an E Ink display on a Tyvex cloth - which is a very durable cloth (used as insulation on houses and for shipping envelopes):

Pervasive Displays - a new company to design and manufacture E Ink e-paper modules

Taiwan's Chi Lin Technology announced the formation of a new subsidiary called Pervasive Displays Inc (PDI) - which will design and manufacture e-paper modules (for commercial and industrial display applications). PDI will develop low-power small-to-medium-sized display components based on E Ink's e-paper technology.

Initial target markets for the business include logistics, retail price tags, and industrial automation where dynamically controlled paper-like displays replace wasteful and inefficient paper signs.

E Ink - do not expect a new monochrome E Ink display in 2011

E Ink's Sri Peruvemba says that there's generally a two-year cycle in E Ink technology as it takes some time to develop and test new generation displays. Sri says that we shouldn't expect a new monochrome E Ink display (to replace the Pearl) in 2011. I guess we'll have to wait till 2012!

What we are likely to see soon are speed improvements - full-motion video (24fps) using updated drivers and faster processors. Bookeen has already been showing about 10-15fps video on Pearl displays.

Snaplet - a shape sensing flexible E Ink bracelet

Canada's Human Media Lab is showing a new flexible E Ink display prototype called Snaplet. This device is a wrist-mounted bracelet that has a touch display and shape sensing: when you open it up it automatically opens a notepad applications, and when you take it and curve it next to your ear it answers a phone call... pretty neat:

It's still pretty bulky of course, but this might be an interesting form factor for a phone. And it somewhat reminds us of the OLED bracelet that Universal Display and LG are developing for the US army:
