Aurora - a new E Ink panel technology for low-temperature applications

E Ink announced their new Aurora panels, which are monochrome matrix e-paper panels aimed towards low-temperature applications. Aurora panels can still operate even at -25 C. It is ideal for electronic shelf label and smart cards applications in the retail, medical and logistics markets.

E Ink will start producing Aurora panels soon and the first panels will ship to customers in July 2013. One such partner, Opticon, plan to release IP rated freezer tags in 2", 2.7", 4.41", and 7.4" form factors.

John Lewis is testing graphic bi-stable LCD e-paper tags

John Lewis (a UK department store retailer) is testing graphic e-paper labels to replace traditional paper ones. The new labels show product information, pricing, promotions, QR codes and reviews. The project is being handled by Perhouse and ZDB. ZBD uses bi-stable LCD panels. John Lewis is performing the test at their Exeter shop.

Back in January 2012 we reported about Coop Denmark, Denmark's leading consumer goods retailer, plans to start using ZBD's e-paper shelf labels in their 77 stores. Coop's project is worth $9.2 million.

IBM retail-of-the-future vision includes E Ink shelf labels

IBM is developing new systems for retail and energy suppliers. This is part of their 'Smarter-Planet' initiative to create useful, efficient and green systems. IBM has shown new electronic shelf labels that use E Ink to display prices. The labels themselves are made by MariSense.

E Ink rebrands the segmented display product line to SURF

E Ink announced today that their segmented display product line is now called SURF. Over 15 million products with E Ink segmented display have been sold already, including the Samsung Alias 2 phone, the new Phosphor wristwatches, the Esquire magazine cover and the Lexmark jumpdrive.

SURF displays are ultra-thin, rugged and flexible. They are ideal for consumer electronics, medical devices, PC-accessory, display smartcards, capacity indicators, electronic shelf labels, signage and communications applications.
