Kobo reports high demand for the Aura One

Canada-based Rakuten Kobo says that demand for its new 7.8" E Ink Aura One e-reader is very strong in Canada. The e-reader is "selling at a blistering pace in Canada" - and some locations have run out of stock.

The Kobo Aura One is a large e-reader that sports a 7.8" 300 PPI E Ink display and is water resistant (IPX8, which means it can be submerged in 2 meters of water). Other features include a 1Ghz CPU and 512Mb of RAM. The Aura One weighs 230 grams and is only 6.9mm thick. The Aura One costs $229.

Visionect helps develop a solar-powered ePaper-based violence prevention system

Mexico-based PERO360 developed a new solar-powered E Ink kiosk called Community HUB, that help students in schools report violence cases anonymously and safely. A 12-month trial in Mexico saw rediced abusive behavior and helped the school implement new violence prevention politics. Community HUB won the World Summit Aware for Inclusion and Empowerment.

The Community HUB uses Visionect's E Ink system. The developers say e-paper is the best fit for this kind of application due to the low power consumption and the outdoor visibility.

E Ink installs a prototype 32" E Ink display in Boston's city hall

In June 2014 (exactly two years ago), E Ink and GDS announced the world's largest e-paper module, a 32" 2560x1440 display that targets digital signage and information kiosk applications.

A few days ago, E Ink and GDS installed a prototype 32" solar-powered E Ink display on Boston's City Hall Plaza. The sign will provide information on local events and help residents and visitors locate nearby landmarks

E Ink signs a 5-year e-paper shelf label supply deal with Media Markt

According to the Economic Daily News, E InK Holdings signed a 5-year supply agreement with Germany-based consumer electronics retail chain, for the supply of electric shelf labels (ESLs).

E Ink says that it already cooperated with 20 retail chains around the world, to perform ESL trials, but this may be the company's first large-scale deployment agreement.

E Ink demonstrate new color and flexible e-Paper panels at SID 2016

E Ink had a very interesting booth at SID 2016, showcasing its new color e-paper displays, and also other new and existing displays and prototypes.

First up, we have E Ink's new Advanced Color ePaper (ACeP), which is a high-quality full-color E Ink display. ACeP enables rich-color displays, which is enabled by colored pigments and not color-filters like in E Ink's older color displays.

Dasung launches a crowdfunding campaign for its 13.3" E Ink monitors

In January 2015, Dasung launched the Paperlike - a 13.3" 1600x1200 USB E Ink monitor, aimed to be a secondary computer display for reading documents. The company offered the first few units for $975, and has now launched an IndieGogo flexible campaign to sell the second batch of monitors.

The PaperLike project already raised over $48,000 - and each monitor costs $799. Dasung estimates that it will start shipping those monitors in August 2016.

Visionect discusses digital signage e-paper deployment issues

E Ink developer and integrator Visionect published a new article in which the company analyses all the intricacies of deploying electronic paper in different digital signage scenarios.

The article discusses the need of a new kind of signage, the power efficiency and readability of e-paper, and the challenges in deploying e-paper signage solutions. This is a very comprehensive report, and is a good read for anyone interested in signage and in e-paper. Read it here.

PopSlate 2 raises over $1.1 million

Last month PopSlate launched a crowdfunding campaign to finalize development and production of their 2nd-gen iPhone case, the PopSlate 2. The campaign was a hug success, and the company raised over $1.1 million.

The PopSlate 2 offers a 4.7" 800x450 E Ink display for the back of your phone. The case adds 4 mm to your phone, and connects to the phone via a Lightning connector that also charges your phone from the PopSlate's battery. The PopSlate 2 supports iPhone 6, 6S, 6 plus and 6S Plus.
