E Ink signs a strategic agreement with Dalian DKE LCD to co-promote e-paper applications in China

E Ink Holdings signed a strategic agreement with Chinese industrial LCD maker Dalian DKE LCD to co-promote e-Paper applications in China. E Ink Holdings signed the agreement via its China-based e-Paper subsidiary Transcend Optronics.

As part of the agreement, E Ink's technology will be used by DKE to develop price-competitive segmented e-paper display solutions for IoT applications. DKE will produce the displays using its STN (super-twisted nematic)-TFT manufacturing equipment.

Switzerland-based BePooler designs solar-power E Ink car park signs

Switzerland-based BePooler developed an off-the-gird solar-powered E Ink parking signs which reserve free parking spots for commuters in Bepooler’s Park & Ride service.

BePooler says that this service is the first of its kind in the world. BePooler is already in use by 15 companies - to generate over 300 shared trips per week. BePooler is supported by preferential parking spaces booked for those who join the service. The parking signs display the license plates of the vehicles participating in the program.

Visionect and Soofa launch solor-powered color E Ink based next-gen bulletin boards

An MIT spinoff company called Soofa partnered with Visionect to create a solar-powered E Ink based next-gen bulletin board. The Soofa Sign shares information with the local community with an aim to contribute to the city's sustainability goals.

The Soofa Sign is wireless and runs entirely off the solar panel on its top - which means that installation is truly plug-and-play and hassle-free as it only requires four bolts. The display itself is a 32" color E Ink panel. Soofa is now installing signs in Boston, MA - and will soon expand to other cities in the US.

Microsoft research developed a wireless energy-neutral E Ink display

Microsoft Research developed a small e-paper (E Ink) based display that harvests its entire energy using photo-voltaic cells on the back. Using low-energy bluetooth the device connects tot he network every 1-25 minutes (depends on the ambient lighting) to update the display.

The display itself seems very small (around 2-3 inch in size and is a very low resolution one). This is a very neat little gadget, although it's unlikely this will be turned into a real commercial product, at this stage it is just a research project.

Bus stop information display pioneer Papercast sees accelerated demand

A couple of months ago we reported about a new bus stop information display trail in Singapore’ that used color 31.2" E Ink displays with LED front light. The system design and integration was performed by Visionect, and the company behind the project is called Papercast.

Papercast, based in Ljubljana, Slovenia,  now announced that it is opening a new office in London to meet "growing demand across the European region". Papercast said it has experienced accelerated demand for its world-class digital passenger information solution in some of the world’s more forward thinking passenger transport markets, with deployments in Asia, Europe and the USA.

Is Apple thinking about an E Ink keyboard for future devices?

According to reports, Apple is in talks with Sonder, an Australian startup that is now part of Foxconn's incubator program regarding its E Ink keyboard technology. Sonder confirmed that Apple's procurement board reached out to the company.

The Sonder Keyboard was announced in June 2015, with a price tag of $299. The keyboard hasn't been released yet, but advanced pre-orders are available for $199. Sonder says the keyboard will ship by the end of 2016. This a full keyboard in which all letter and numeric keys are small E Ink displays that can be customized. The keyboard supports Bluetooth and has front lighting.

E Ink, HTC and Palladio to co-develop smart medication packaging labels

E Ink announced a partnership with HTC Healthcare and the Palladio Group to develop E Ink smart medication packaging labels. The three companies will develop an IoT-based smart device and smartphone software that will improve medication adherence.

The E Ink label will display personalized content that can be pushed to the packaging label as a communication interface, delivering vital information to patients and creating a gateway to improve patient engagement.

Visionect expand its Joan E Ink Meeting Room Assistant product lineup

Visionect announced that it is expanding its Joan meeting room assistant lineup. The company now offers three different versions: the basic Joan Assistant with Wi-Fi and a non-touch display for viewing only, the Joan Manager that allows booking on the spot via a touchscreen and the Joan Executive that adds WPA2-EAP encryption to the Wi-Fi.

Visionect now takes pre-orders for the new products, which will officially launch on October 1st. Joan Assistant retails for $279, Joan Manager for $349 and Jaon Executive for $399. E Ink and Toppan Printing developed a 32" color flexible e-paper display

E Ink, in collaboration with TOppan Printing, developed a 32" flexible color E Ink display. The companies presented a first prototype, and the plan is to produce this display by the end of 2017.

This is the largest color flexible E Ink ever developed. We already saw flexible 32" Mobius E Ink panels, but these were black and white. This display uses color-filters produced by Toppan. The display is 0.4 mm thick and it can be curved (it is not truly flexible by the end user). The companies say that this new display offer a higher color gamut compared to previous color E Ink displays.
