Remarkable, the company behind the reMarkable 10.3" 1872 x 1404 E Ink tablet says that it has sold over 1 million devices, generating over $300 million in revenue in 2021 (with an operating profit of $31 million).
reMarkable says it closed a new financing round, with a valuation of $1 billion. The company did not disclose more about the funding round - beyond saying that they have sold a minority stake for several international investors.
Interestingly, the company only released two models since 2013 - and indeed they say that consumers do not need to replace their E Ink tablets often - maybe once every 10 years. The company recently launched a new monthly service that provides continuous software updates; cloud storage; connectivity with Dropbox, Google Drive and One Drive, an extended warranty for the tablet; handwriting conversion; screen sharing and more.
The reMarkable's display is relatively fast (55 ms) and supports pen input. The device is based on a Linux OS and features include 8GB of storage, 512MB of RAM, a 1Ghz ARM A9 CPU, 3,000mAh battery and ePub and PDF file support. The reMarkable is now shipping for $599.
